Believe it or not, March 28th is technically the last day of my program. I know, weird. But, as I’ve mentioned before, SIT programs are laid out a bit differently from a normal semester in college. The first week once you arrive in the country is reserved for orientation and getting to know the city and the people who will inevitably become your friends for the next few months. Then, the two months following that are packed with lectures, briefings, and a study trip. This is the time when life feels the most ‘normal’, you go to class every day and do homework like any other student. However, the third month is mostly free of classes in lieu of time to write a 30-page Independent Study Project on whatever you want. During this period, we basically have no classes except for our language classes. The ISP is the most important part of SIT programs so they basically give you free reign to conduct interviews and do research.
So, given all of that, yes, March 28th is the last official day of classes. I only had two finals for this program in which we wrote essays on the given topics. After that, we will only have 6 hours of French class a week and the rest of the time is free.
Now listen, this time is not meant to be spent traveling. But guess what I’m doing anyway?
I mean any sane person would do the same, wouldn’t they?
Now I did say that the ISP is an important part of the program, and it is. But, traveling and learning from the cultures and people around you is just as important. Besides, we are required to be in our host city at least three days a week for language classes and research can be done from anywhere on a laptop.
However, I don’t want it to seem as though you can just slack off during this time. SIT helps you do pre-research and had us working to get us ready for the project during the months before. More so, I am so excited to write my ISP because it is on a topic that interests me and I am getting the opportunity to interview experts in the field.
I will definitely be taking advantage of the time I have left, both to see everything that I can by traveling and also by studying and meeting with important people in the global sphere.
Profite bien pendant le reste du semestre!!
