Contrary to popular belief, I hate to report that every day while abroad is not a crazy adventure. But sometimes I think that is a good thing, it gives you the opportunity to slow down and just experience your host city. Oftentimes people who study abroad get too focused on traveling all over that they don’t spend a ton of time in their own host city and country.
So, what do you really do during a basic day of study abroad?
For me, I wake up at a different time every day because the schedule and classes I have change every day. Sometimes we will start at 9:30 am for a review session to go over lectures we’ve done in the past two weeks. On other days we’ll start at 8 am with a guest lecturer. Then there are the days when we all have a different start time because we have advising sessions with our professors from 9:30 am – 12 pm. Either way though, every morning starts with some sort of meeting or lecture which takes place at the SIT office in Geneva. These classes go until around 12 pm or 12:30 pm when we have a break to go get lunch.
After lunch, depending on the day, we will take the train 15 minutes to a different town called Nyon, where we have our French classes twice a week. The other days a week we will either have another lecture or we will have the afternoon free. Most of the time after our afternoon classes my friends and I will find a cafe to do our work at or we’ll walk around the cities a bit. Once we all lose our concentration and start talking more than doing work, we head home for the night. When home, if I don’t have more work to do, I will work out a bit by going for a run or doing some yoga.
In the evenings we all have dinner with our host families. For me, I live in an apartment with only a host mom, who I absolutely adore. During dinner, we always chat about our days or whatever else happens to come up. Once we are finished I help her clean up the kitchen and then we sit down to watch a French series we’ve become addicted to.
I think there is beauty to be found in the little moments, the quiet moments you’ll only experience if you slow down and just enjoy it.
Quand même, profite bien!
